Before and After: Chippendale Chair Makeover

  • Before we even moved into our new house I knew I wanted chippendale chairs for our living room. I had been seeing them everywhere in so many different colors and I loved the look. Unfortunately I did not love the price tag. I had my eyes on these white and navy Jonathan Adler chairs, but at more than $700 a piece I knew they weren’t in the cards. I searched for any lower cost options, with no luck until I did a quick search on Craigslist and came across a pair of chippendale style chairs that just needed a little TLC.

As you can see there were an ugly (in my opinion) black and had no seat cushion. Brett and I spent our holiday break cleaning, painting and sealing the chairs so they’d be ready for move in day. We used this chalk paint so we didn’t have to do any sanding beforehand and finished it off with a lacquer so we could get a shiny finish.

For the seat cushions, we had thin pieces of plywood measured and cut to fit the seat and then bought two-inch thick foam board and covered it with upholstery fabric.

To finish off this part of the living room with a gold bamboo-style tray table that I found at Hobby Lobby for less than $50. (Steal!) It’s no longer available online, but I did find a similar (though more expensive) option here.
